Ready Position

The Ready Position is a variant of the Athletic StanceIt’s the basic nordic downhill skiing position and when combined with snowplowing is the most effective way to descend a hill safely.

To increase stability

  • Widen the distance between your skis. Feet placed wider than shoulder width is more stable than feet close together.
  • Bend deeper at the knees and ankles. Get very low to increase stability. Weight should be evenly distributed between the right and left ski when travelling straight and between the front and the back of the foot.
  • Hold your arms ahead and wider than shoulder-width apart. Turn them in the direction you want to go.
  • Look where you want to go.

Adjust these variables to increase or decrease stability as needed. Use the Ready Position when skiing straight downhill, snowplowing, skidding, step turning or to transition between different downhill techniques.
